ROTI CANAI FOR BREAKFAST?

Malaysian Breakfast Favourite ia Roti Canai. It is a form of puffed bread served hot with curry or dhal. Tastes best when taken for breakfast or morning tea; eaten with the hand (the 'right' one of course!) or using fork and spoon; accompanied by curry or dhal and washed down with strong, hot, sweet kopi-O (Malaysian style coffee) or teh tarik (pull milky tea). Roti canai or roti chennai is a dish unique to Malaysia, which has its origins lost in the Indian community of those countries. Roti means bread in Hindi (and Malay) The term 'canai' comes from 'channa', a mixture of boiled chickpeas in a spicy gravy from Northern India which it was traditionally served with.

The ideal roti is flat, round or square in shape, fluffy on the inside but crispy and flaky on the outside. Today in Malaysia, there are many variations of roti canai such as "Roti Biasa", "Roti Garing", "Roti Bom", "Roti Roomali", "Roti Tisu", "Roti Madu", "Roti Planta", "Roti Sayur", "Roti Pisang", "Roti Jagung" etc. etc. etc., and at the roti canai stalls, non-vegeterian varieties of roti include "Marthabat", "Roti Telor", "Roti Sardin", "Roti Bawang" etc. etc. etc. In Malaysia it is served with "dhal", and, or "curry", in Thailand it is usually served with sugar, and, or condense milk, in India and in Sri Lanka with "channa", "dhal" or "curry".

While everyone enjoy the good taste in Roti Canai, there is certain unhygenic practice has been overlooked in its preparation. Eggs used for making roti telur normally come in paper tray direct from the farm. Some dirt and chicken shit do stick to the shells of these fresh eggs. These eggs if not washed properly will transfer chicken feces in your roti canai. How could it happen?

Well the unwashed eggs normally still have fractions or bits of feces stuck on the shell. You can see whitish or brownish or blackish stains or stickings on the shell. These bits are shit mind you. So the roti canai maker, will pick up the eggs from the carton to make roti telur. Without washing his hands the 'penebar roti canai' will start 'menebar' the roti and the whole roti canai become 'contaminated'. The work top and the roti dough now got shit all over. IT MAY NOT BE SEEN WITH OUR EYES BUT THE ROTI THAT YOU EAT IS ALREADY CONTAMINATED WITH NAJIS/IMPURITY.

So the next time, you want to eat roti canai, ensure that the eggs are washed. You can check this by doing visual inspection. If the eggs are still in the carton, then there are definitely not washed, so don't order. If you see the eggs are kept nicely in a bowl, then it could have been washed. Washed eggs look clean anyway. Visual inspection is essential to ensure you don't eat your favourite roti canai with chicken shit as part of the ingredientt!!.
